— MTV — 4,000,000 People Can’t Be Wrong

The work

  • Launched: August 1, 2011
  • Responsibilities: Research, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Graphic Design, Template Development, CMS Development

When 4 million people want to participate in your party, you’d better have a fantastic party. Thankfully, that’s what we built in the form of the O Music Awards website. From October 3 to October 31, 2011, the site generated almost 22 million votes, with over 13 million votes shared on Facebook and Twitter, an increase of over 500% over the previous event. At one point, the site saw 68,412 visitors in a single hour. That’s serving awesome content and targeted advertising to a heckuva lot of eyeballs.

So what are the O Music Awards? In 2011, MTV launched the first music awards show that celebrates the way the Internet, social media and technology have transformed our relationship with music. The O Music Awards embraces the bleeding edge with categories like “Best Tweet,” and “Best Music Hack,” and it is the first awards show that can only be fully experienced in the digital realm.

MTV Networks came to Happy Cog with a challenging vision and an aggressive timeline. We needed to help plan and deliver an interactive experience to be deployed in four stages: a blog to promote the event, on online voting experience, the live online broadcast of the awards ceremony, and the archived collection of performances and outrageous clips from the event. And they needed it done in a timeline that consisted of a few months.

Using a responsible multi-device design and deployment strategy, our adaptive framework delivers a compelling singular experience across mobile, tablet, and desktop. In addition, Happy Cog worked with MTV to only serve licensed content where appropriate, on a device-by-device basis. This allowed MTV to continue selling ads and serving video in the same ways they were accustomed to while allowing Happy Cog to manage a single web site to serve everyone, everywhere.
